sea from Belgium

Day 202 He calms the storm, So that its waves are still.

The sea has a particular quality to heal, to fuse friendships, and to help many to reflect and come to decisions.

There are many times water and particularly the sea are used to heal or to put right what was wrong on the earth by God. One of the most important was the great flood. People debate that it ever happened but I just accept it as truth and thank God that he allowed the remnant of Noah and his family to re-populate the earth and to re-seek the love of God.

 J.R.R. TolkienThe Silmarillion

“It is said by the Eldar that in water there lives yet the echo of the Music of the Ainur more than in any substance that is in this Earth; and many of the Children of Ilúvatar hearken still unsated to the voices of the Sea, and yet know not for what they listen.”

I love this description of the echoes of the music of the Ainur found in the water. When God spoke life into existence did he actually sing it into existence? Did the angels help God by singing into existence all things through the direction and power of God? We perhaps will never know in this mortal life but wouldn’t it be a wondrous act to watch.

The sea is wondrous and echoes of God’s hand. After all at creation God had His Spirit flying over the surface of the waters. I think water can be argued to be the most precious element of the universe. Life can not exist without it, and if any colonisation of any planet is going to be successful then water will have to be planned into the project.

Jesus described seeking the living waters, and He describes how the Holy Spirit is the living waters as He is the door.

Psalm 107:29

29 He calms the storm,
So that its waves are still.

Of course Jesus did go on to calm the storm;

Mark 4:35-41

39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.

I pray Lord God, that your eternal presence will be made known to us through the power of the elements like nature and the sea. Rain down your love and send calm winds to guide us to our destination.

Amen
