Run to the cross 4

The storm as raging outside the cabin and the wind and rain was howling. I was sat in a comfy chair and it seemed almost pointless, in fact ludicrous to go outside to run around the hills.

Many people of faith are inspired to set about wonderful acts of kindness and love and some turn into massive works of faith. Many people think they could do such wonderful things but because they have a comfortable life they never get around to it.

I decided now was the moment to act. I left the cabin and started to jog up the hill through the winding path through the forest around Great Tower in Windermere. The forest seemed alive and wild as the strong winds tore through them like an inescapable voice. Everyone was inside warm and comfortable but here I could feel the voice leading me onward.

Lord Baden Powell acted by starting the scouting movement and it is undoubtedly a movement for good, instilling into each young person great values and an inquiring faith that will do them well in their life. Healthy bodies, minds and spirits.

One of the values that the scouting movement tries to instil is;

A scout has courage in all situations

The path led me through more trees to a high point and I started to follow the path upward again to the top of the rocks. The wind was so strong it blew me back from my climb and seem to be seriously strong at every point. I wasn’t afraid but just felt the need to call out God’s name in praise and continue jogging calling out passages from the bible.

Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, and the earth was formless and void and the Spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters.

John 1:1

In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

Down from the rocks, too fast at times, down the path and as I descend into the woods the temperature gets warmer and I feel relaxed and ready to rest off the evening once again in the warm cabin and the comfortable chair.

Our lives are filled with moments of great action, or a chance of great action and of periods of rest. Both are needed like the scouting movement’s emphasis of developing not just a healthy body, but of minds and an a strong faith. I am reminded that God sends this message to us as well, but I wonder whether Lord Baden Powel ever read the section in Deuteronomy and thought “that’s going to be the basis of the movement and we will all teach our children”

Deuteronomy 6:4-7

Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
