red leaves - Sumac tree

Day 299 for it is the life of all flesh Its blood sustains its life

I was walking past this wonderfully colourful tree a few times today. I am constantly amazed at all the different diverse colours and variety of shapes and designs.

Leviticus 17:14

for it is the life of all flesh. Its blood sustains its life.

The sap sustains the tree and it wears its colours on its branches. I wonder whether the red is designed for a purpose to attract animals to carry its seeds off to far off places.

The red colours of the leaves remind me of the blood of many that are sacrificing their lives daily for their faith.

Mark 4:35-41

Wind and Wave Obey Jesus

35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. 40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” 41 And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

This story of Jesus also reminds me that what difficulties that we may face, even though we may be scared, when we call upon Jesus – he will be there to comfort us. Perhaps he may not take these tests away, but what ever storms we face he will be with us. We have a guarantee that people may persecute us but there is more beyond this world.

A phrase that jumps out at me is that Jesus says right at the start that he will cross over to the other side with us. In the story He is talking about crossing the lake, but could we take this to mean He will travel this journey with us, to the other side? I think so, as Jesus has been with me in this journey why would he ever abandoned us, as he says he will be with us to the end of the age.

He is God so this is no problem for Him, for after all He has done this already in the crucifixion and the resurrection, but what startles me is how He would do this and travel with us.

Hebrews 2:6

What is man that You are mindful of him?

Dear Lord, thank you for all the diverse plants and trees on this earth. Even though we may deny you are with us somedays, forgive us, for you have always been there and we have just been walking with our eyes shut. Open up our eyes, and ears and our hearts to your path.
