There are three pictures for today. First was taken at Blackpool front looking at the sun with our backs to the Blackpool tower. We see a dazzling sun and a river through the sand meandering over to the right. We also see a straight cloud of light pointing to this same place.
Second picture is the sunset over my favourite tree. It is a feathery type of image with the clouds creating this effect.
Third is a blood red sunset picture, zoomed in. Whilst on this day out with the family I encountered many families, many people for a good old fun day out. There was a family that was clearly Muslims, and there were many other faiths wandering around. Christians seem hard to spot because they don’t wear anything to identify them as Christians. Some may wear a small cross but that tends to be it. Christians, we should be able to see and identify them by their actions. I say should because there are many people who profess to be Christian and are not. There are many people who over the last week have stressed that they didn’t like to be classed as Christian, but Catholic, Methodist and other denominations. This really makes a mockery of what Jesus said first and what Paul later stressed in his letters. You could almost say that this clouds the issue, it doesn’t point people straight to Jesus.
3 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? 4 For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal?
Watering, Working, Warning
5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. 8 Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor.
9 For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building. 10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
I have seen so much division over the years. Division when people joke about how one person is a Methodist, so he will preach for hours, and how one person is an anglican and how one person is a Catholic. It saddens me every time someone jokes about these things because surely there is none apart from Christ if we all profess Christ as our Lord and saviour. For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building.
Thinking today about the different faiths, I reflected as I walked down the sand, that many faith do indeed point to god, or point to a god, or many gods. Like the shaft of cloud pointing and the river in the sand pointing. But that is were the similarity ends. Where all faith may point to a god, Christianity is separate in that it is the only faith that provides the answer, provides salvation. That salvation is through the death and resurrection as a historical fact of Jesus Christ. No other faith can give this as a foundation of their faith.
For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Many faiths may get on, or not, but it is only Jesus Christ who can atone for our dreadful sin and present us before the Father blameless so that everyone can live in heaven in an eternal salvation. A red sunset for Christ’s blood shed for us. Unlike other faiths we can not get to heaven by doing good works or by paying our way or by offering many sacrifices, but by accepting that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Saviour and accepting the Holy Spirit’s guidance in reshaping our lives through repentance.
I pray we may all find blessing through Jesus Christ our Lord.
