dandelion stands against the storm

Day 152 O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the works thy hand hath made

The picture is of a dandelion seed head with hundreds of little seeds delicately poised. Around us tonight strong winds of a storm rage and in the morning the seeds will probably be gone. Pictures can preserve a little of the original, or an idea but they fail in that they do not tell of the further story. They do no tell of the underneath parts, the hidden parts and all of the things that go into making one wonderful dandelion flower.

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
consider all the works thy hand hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
thy power throughout the universe displayed:

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God; to thee,
How great thou art, how great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God; to thee,
How great thou art, how great thou art!

God is great and we could get, as the hymn tells us, an idea of God through the almighty storms that rage and through the mighty universe, but I find more so that the micro-universe reveals God’s presence and God’s design. God chooses the small and frail and fragile things as well to show his immense beauty and message – it all points to him.

1 Kings 19:11-13

God’s Revelation to Elijah

11 Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lordbut the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, butthe Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.

In these verses about God speaking and appearing to Elijah we see he is not found in the storm or the fire but in the still small voice.

But what about the dandelion, and in the morning it will be gone, a work of art – each one of billions on this earth. But in the morning despite the dandelion looking very bedraggled and perhaps even bent over, we shall know that the seeds have flown away to make new dandelions and carry on the work of this glorious work of art. It doesn’t stop at one dandelion it carries on and makes many more times itself.

John 12:23-24

23 And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour is come that the Son of Man should be glorified.

24 Verily, verily I say unto you, unless a grain of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone; but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

Lord Father, your Son, Jesus did this for us voluntarily. He died on the cross so that his seed could spread throughout all who accept him. Let our seed, our good works spread throughout everyone we meet and do good, so when we leave this place we may leave many seeds of our life, and I pray that we do this sincerely through Jesus Christ who is the only Son of God who offers the hope of eternity, from the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Amen
